Did you listen to that new song Justin Bieber released? How can you still be watching Rick & Morty; I’m waiting for the new season of Money Heist? Seriously, who wears bell-bottoms these days?
These are quite some phrases that you get to hear when you are not really ready to let go of the trends of the 00s (and of course, the 90s). The youth of today stand real close to technology. But back when we were in school? I guess a couple episodes of Doraemon, a cricket playground and the regular but futile rant for homework sufficed the appetite. And today? Are you cool if you don’t binge your favorite series, submit your practical reports in a PDF and play some awesome-graphic-I-can-never-get-tired-of-this computer game? Well, not sure.
Growing up, we saw how much unlike the kids of today we were back in Kindergarten. While things have become “cooler” with the introduction of new fashion trends, technology and start-ups, the urge to blend back into the “good old days” always sticks around the corner. Here are 5 absolute trends that the kids wherein the kids of 00s & 2010s stood apart.
1. Memes
Being a typical Indian kid from the 00s, you must have grown up having the Tarak Mehta series as the ultimate source of comedy. For kids of this era, it’s memes. Memes hit the internet like a tidal wave and the popularity kept sky-rocketing. Kids of the 00s would hardly remember any sarcastic jokes, leave alone memes. Comparing them to today’s kids would barely get us any similarity in this regard. While Twitter came into the social media scenario in 2006, one would have been at least a graduate to have heard of some blue-colored bird that gets onto internet, news from parts of the world. Meme culture started in mid-2010 after Instagram was introduced in 2010. Cannot say about memes, but who misses those comic books from the railway platform?
2. Cartoon Shows
With awesome cartoon shows like The Jungle Book (1993), Looney Tunes, Arabian Nights (2000) and way more going off-air and Jetix being replaced by Disney XD, kids of today have missed a huge lot of cartoons shows that made our day after school hours. The new cartoons that air on Indian Cartoon Channels now, come and go faster than seasons. Pride check: No cartoon can beat the love for the Tom & Jerry show, which even worked its charm into the hearts of our parents and grand-parents too. Thanks to repeating telecasts of some cartoon shows (which aren’t regular either), at least kids of this decade can witness some of our favorite cartoon characters. Which is your favorite character?
3. Cassettes & Music CDs
iPods. Spotify. Playlists. We didn’t have these terms back then. How easy is listening to music or creating a playlist these days? Hear a tune, no worries if you don’t know the lyrics – Google can search the song for you out of the most unscrutinized corner, listen to it and download it. Plus, you can keep it on your iPod or SD card and take them wherever you like. Wow. I wish searching for a song was as easy back in those days. Back then, a person had to make a list of songs, ask the music shop guy to put them all in a cassette and then wait for 10 days more before your cassette is ready. Alternate? One has to buy the whole album CD which costs you extra. Even podcasts come easy these days. People in the 00s had to keep their one ear close to the radio for podcasts/songs/announcements earlier. Have you ever waited for any announcement on the radio?
4. Walkie-Talkies
“The ice-cream is in the fridge. The ground is clear to infiltrate the kitchen. Over”
“Copy that”
Kids these days learn alphabets from YouTube (I hardly remember hearing that name before I grew 13). The next thing you know, your middle-school cousin over-smartened you in coding. That hurts, right? Well, the kids of the 00s weren’t fortunate enough to play with smartphones back in school. But holding a walkie-talkie to the nose and pretending to be James Bond was enough a thrill for every 00s’ kid. Every owner had his/her undivided attention to their respective talkie and that insecurity to lose a single piece of the fellow detective’s information if the talkie is shut off. Would the generation of “Why don’t you pick up my phone?” ever witness that?
5. Polaroid and Camcorder
How old were you before you took your first DSLR photo? 10? 20? Well, way before SLRs came into the picture, instant cameras did the job. Today, you don’t even need a camera. Smartphones do it all. The best part about it is that you can click candids too. But if you dare click a single photo than required with a Polaroid, then nothing can evade the sermon that you get for wasting the reel with which you could have clicked your little sister sitting on the table spilling porridge all over her frock instead! Of course, calling the modern cameras “economical” would be the understatement of the decade, but watching the childhood footage with a red dot indicating “recording”, fps and the date mentioned in the boundary of the video never fails to keep the love for old day polaroids and camcorders preserved.
